Our Adventure Has Started
Alan and I have been excitedly preparing for our trip to Italy the past few months. We have been so blessed to receive the support of Westside Church of Christ, various friends, and family. We could not be doing this mission work without you all, and we are truly thankful that you partnered with us! This blog is to keep you all updated on the work we do there in Italy.
These past few months have consisted of a two week training program in Searcy, AR, several trips to Goodwill, several postings on Craigslist, leaving our jobs, lots of packing, and many goodbyes. We will sorely miss our friends from home. Thank goodness for Skype!
After all the preparation, the day finally came when we left Searcy. We headed from Searcy, AR up to Wisconsin to visit with my good friend Katie for a few days. That trip was supposed to be done in a day, but we left Searcy much later in the day than we had planned. Alan was driving a u-haul truck while I drove the car. We got walkie talkies so we wouldn't get lonely, and if anyone was eavesdropping on our conversations then well, I hope they enjoyed the free entertainment! When we had packed the u-haul, which we didn't fill, Alan decided to lay out the bed so that we could sleep on it. He was determined that if we had to sleep on the road, then we were going to sleep in the back of that u-haul truck. I was determined that we wouldn't need to sleep on the road! However, since we left late in the day, we did end up sleeping in that truck. So at a truck stop somewhere in Illinois, we slept in the back of a u-haul truck. The temperature was 19 degrees Fahrenheit. It was freezing. I even felt Denver, our black lab, shivering. He ended up under the covers with us, which is a total rule breaker move, but you have to make exceptions when it's below freezing. Five hours later we were freezing and ready to go. We had a fun time in Wisconsin with Katie. Went skating with her and her boyfriend at an outdoor rink in downtown Milwaukee, watched a Disney movie, and talked a ton. Typical. :)
After Wisconsin, we headed toward Maryland, where we are staying with my parents for Christmas. Unfortunately, Alan had a stomach bug (maybe even food poisoning) that day, which meant we had to pull over and stop frequently. Made the trip a lot longer, but we finally rolled into my parents driveway 20hrs after leaving Katie's.
We are enjoying our time here in Maryland. We've been busy running last minute errands and sorting our things. We're still trying to sell our car. So if you know anyone who wants a 1 year old 2012 Nissan Sentra (standard transmission) that lives in Md, let me know!
We will be flying out to Florence, Italy on December 31st. We are so thankful for our families who have supported us and encouraged us during this time of preparation. You all don't know what it means to us that you have been excited for us while we prepare.
Alan and I wish you all a Merry Christmas, and we'll be writing/talking to you all from Italy starting in the New Year!
